You're not imagining it
Engagement is off right now, focus on this instead.
Engagement feels off lately, you’re not imagining it.
So many accounts are seeing fewer likes or quieter responses than expected. It can be frustrating but pause…
Before you go down that road, you need to understand something important.
The way platforms measure engagement has changed.
Instagram is tracking how long someone watches your content and it takes a bit longer than usual before it counts it as a “view.” We’re also keeping an eye on whether they save it or share. Likes tell the platform that your followers are interested in the content, shares tell the platform that people other than your followers will like it too.
LinkedIn has shifted toward dwell time and conversation. If someone stops to read your post or comes back to it, that matters more than a like. Comments and interaction always carry more weight than passive scrolling.
YouTube is built around retention. If people click but don’t stay, the content drops. If they stay longer, even without engaging, the platform pushes it further.
Facebook has moved back toward meaningful interaction. Shares, comments and conversations matter here.
If you want to improve your engagement right now, focus on what actually moves content forward today.
What to focus on immediately
Give people a reason to pause
Your first 1-3 seconds matter more than anything else. Check for clear, direct hooks, they outperform vague ones every time. Don’t overthink it or get too poetic.Make your content easy to connect with
People are looking for something that feels familiar. If someone can see themselves in what you’re saying, they are far more likely to comment or share it.Write for one person
Content that tries to speak to everyone usually connects with no one. When your message feels specific, engagement follows.Stay in the conversation after you post
Interaction = community (platforms like that). If someone comments and you respond or if a conversation continues, your content carries further.Pay attention to quiet engagement
Not everything shows up as a like. DMs, saves, shares and longer watch time tell the platform different information about your content. All are important.
Don’t stress if things are off lately, adjust what you’re paying attention to.
This is where I start with clients. We look at what people are doing with their content and build something that works with how platforms operate now.
If you want help figuring out what that looks like for your business, send me a message. We’ll sort it out together.
