Someone with less experience is taking your place
There is a moment that happens before you post something. It’s easy to miss if you’re not paying attention.
Your brain steps in…
Is this too obvious?
Do people already know this?
What if this sounds dumb…
No one cares…
So you tweak it, or even just save it for later and then just like that, it never gets posted.
While you’re at it, someone else hits publish.
They are not more qualified or experienced, they just showed up. Audacity is rewarded online.
Be willing to say something clearly and stand behind it without over-editing it into something safe.
Every time you hold back, you are removing yourself from the conversation.
Research actually backs this up. Studies on decision making show that overthinking increases hesitation and reduces action, even when someone already has enough information to move forward. The brain looks for certainty that doesn’t exist, and in that gap, opportunity moves on.
There is also this idea floating around that talking about your work is “salesy.”
It’s not.
That is one of the most damaging things small business owners have been taught. This may be a conspiracy theroy of mine (one many), that we’re being put into this position to think that we’re being salesy just by existing.
If people don’t understand what you do, they cannot hire you.
If they don’t see your perspective, they cannot trust you.
Educating people on what you do is just stating facts. Your job is not to hide behind your “value” and hope someone figures it out. Your job is to be clear.
You built something real. You have experience. You have proof. You don’t need to water it down to make it palatable. You need to say it out loud.
Action builds visibility
Post the thing before you soften it.
Say it the way you would say it to a client.
Let it be clear instead of perfect.
People who move forward are not the ones who waited until they felt ready.
They are the ones who showed up anyway.
